Welcome to the website of Toft Historical Society
Toft is a small village in the South Eastern corner of Cambridgeshire, approximately 6 miles west of the City of Cambridge; the parish is intersected by the Greenwich Meridian. In the 2001 census Toft had 219 households and a population of 583. The name 'Toft' is derived from an old Viking word meaning "curtilage," or "homestead". Toft was listed in the Domesday book of 1086 (as Tofth) then having a population of about 193.
Toft Historical Society was formed in 2001 for anyone interested in participating in investigating and recording the history of the Village, its community, and its environment past and present. The Society is an informal group holding regular meetings, talks and events, open to all, and always interested in new material, contacts and members. Since its foundation the Society has organised a series of exhibitions addressing different aspects of village life that have been publicly displayed biennially in the Peoples' Hall. Each exhibition has aroused considerable interest within Toft and surrounding villages. The most recent exhibition was in March 2014 - showing the results of the "All Our Stories" project.
In the interest of maintaining a lasting documentation a web site was opened to coincide with the 2007 exhibition Mapping Toft. The growing archive is now undergoing comprehensive development and, because of its expanding nature, is re-launched in 2010 as a dedicated site with a regularly evolving range of contributions - firstly, covering the subjects of past and future exhibitions, secondly, providing a locus for articles and documents of a relevant nature, and thirdly, for a revised general history of the Village.
Every effort has been made to obtain prior permission and consent to use all material published on the Toft Historical Society Web Archive, including depicted images and recorded comment affecting individuals. The Society would be grateful to be informed of any discrepancies.
